Adrian Zecha, the legendary hotelier who founded both Aman Resorts and Azerai, is still walking the grounds, still asking “what’s next?” — and still shaping the future of hospitality at age 92.

On a recent visit to Vietnam, Zecha toured Azerai’s two properties — the oceanfront Azerai Ke Ga Bay and the historic Azerai La Residence, Hue — ahead of the former’s fifth anniversary. For Zecha, retirement isn’t on the horizon.

“I feel my new journey is just beginning,” he said with a laugh. “There’s so much to do. God gives you life, you should use it.”

At Ke Ga Bay, the tranquil 56-suite retreat along five kilometers of beach, Zecha reflected on the hallmarks of Azerai’s design philosophy: nature, cultural authenticity, and understated elegance. His longtime partner, Jonathan Breene, echoed that the brand thrives without a “set formula,” instead letting each location define its own luxury.

At La Residence in Hue, a restored 1920s mansion overlooking the Perfume River, Zecha admired how the property captures both the city’s vibrancy and its timeless calm. From river cruises to architectural details, the hotel offers an immersive experience of Hue’s cultural and historical charm.

With global accolades piling up — from being named one of Southeast Asia’s best boutique hotels by The Times of London to topping “Most Instagrammable Hotel” lists — Azerai continues to redefine boutique luxury in the region.

For Zecha, however, the real legacy is people. “I lead fantastic teams who will carry these legacies forward,” he said.
