Capella Kyoto to Open 22 March 2026 in Miyagawa-cho Geisha District
Capella Kyoto_Entrance

Capella Kyoto will open on 22 March 2026 in Kyoto’s historic Miyagawa-cho kagai (geisha district), marking Capella Hotels and Resorts’ debut in Japan. Timed with cherry blossom season and integrated into a restored cultural precinct centred on the Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre, the 89-room luxury hotel strengthens Kyoto’s high-end hospitality landscape while deepening access to living performing arts traditions.

A New Luxury Address in Miyagawa-cho

Set in Kyoto’s historic Miyagawa-cho kagai, Capella Kyoto rises four storeys on the former site of Shinmichi Elementary School. The property sits steps from Kenninji and within walking distance of the Kamo River, an area closely tied to the origins of kabuki.

Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates in collaboration with Singapore-based Brewin Design Office, the 89-key hotel reinterprets Kyoto’s traditional machiya townhouse typology.

Architecturally, the project reflects Kyoto’s spatial composition:

  • Narrow alleyways
  • Layered interior thresholds
  • Hidden courtyard gardens

The opening coincides with sakura season, positioning the hotel launch during one of Kyoto’s peak global travel periods.

Integrated Cultural Development Along Shinmichi Street

Capella Kyoto forms part of a three-part redevelopment along Shinmichi Street:

  • The restored Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre
  • A new community centre
  • The Capella Kyoto hotel

The Kaburenjo has long served as the private training ground for Kyoto’s geiko and maiko. With its restoration complete, Capella guests will gain access to performances within this historically guarded venue.

The integration of hospitality, performing arts, and community infrastructure reflects a conservation-led development model increasingly visible in Kyoto’s protected districts.

Accommodation: 89 Keys with Theatre and Temple Views

The 89-room inventory ranges from Deluxe City Rooms to the 206-sqm Capella Suite.

Room categories include:

  • Premier Theatre Rooms overlooking the Kaburenjo
  • Two Gion Suites with direct views of Kenninji
  • Six Onsen Suites with private hot spring baths
  • Capella Suite (206 sqm) with panoramic Higashiyama skyline views

From the top-floor suite, guests can see the five-tiered Yasaka Pagoda, with vantage points over Miyagawa-cho’s laneways where geiko and maiko move between engagements.

Culinary Concepts Anchored by SoNoMa by SingleThread

SoNoMa by SingleThread

Capella Kyoto’s signature restaurant, SoNoMa by SingleThread, is created in partnership with SingleThread, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant in California’s Dry Creek Valley.

The Kyoto outpost features:

  • A 12-seat counter
  • A 20-seat lounge bar inspired by an ochaya

Chef Keita Tominaga will highlight seasonal agriculture from Kyoto’s Kansai region alongside California’s Sonoma produce traditions.

Additional Dining Venues

  • SingleThread Entremets – seasonal patisserie programme led by Executive Pastry Chef Emma Horowitz and Chef Miu Morita
  • Yoi – late-night kappo dining with modern interpretation and handcrafted cocktails
  • Lanterne – an all-day French brasserie blending Parisian café culture with Japanese design sensibility

Auriga Spa and Wellness Programming

Wellness facilities are anchored by Auriga Spa, Capella’s signature spa concept inspired by lunar cycles and holistic rituals.

Facilities include:

  • Three private onsen rooms
  • Wet and dry saunas
  • Four treatment rooms
  • Fitness centre

Treatment programmes blend Japanese traditions with contemporary wellness practices, aligning with Kyoto’s positioning as a contemplative destination.

Capella Curates: Access to Kyoto’s Living Traditions

Through its “Capella Curates” programming, guests gain structured access to cultural experiences that are typically invitation-only or closed to the public.

Experiences include:

  • Front-row seats at Kaburenjo performances
  • Private ochaya encounters with a maiko
  • A 150-year-old sandal atelier visit for bespoke commissions
  • Kintsugi workshops led by urushi lacquerware masters

This programming positions the hotel not only as accommodation, but as a cultural intermediary within Kyoto’s kagai ecosystem.

Why It Matters

Kyoto’s luxury hotel pipeline has expanded steadily in recent years, but regulatory constraints and preservation priorities limit large-scale new development in historic districts.

Capella Kyoto’s opening is significant for several reasons:

  • Brand Entry: Marks the first Japan property for Capella Hotels and Resorts.
  • Cultural Integration: Direct integration with the Kaburenjo Theatre represents rare access to Kyoto’s performing arts institutions.
  • Adaptive Reuse Model: Built on a former school site within a mixed cultural redevelopment.
  • Peak Season Timing: Opening during cherry blossom season maximises global visibility.

For Kyoto’s hospitality sector, the project underscores a continued shift toward culturally embedded, smaller-scale luxury developments rather than high-density builds.
