Global Hotel Alliance (GHA) has signed a strategic agreement with Tokyu Hotels & Resorts, bringing more than 40 Japanese properties into the GHA DISCOVERY loyalty programme — a move that strengthens GHA’s footprint in Japan’s fast-growing inbound tourism market.

The partnership integrates one of Japan’s established domestic hotel operators into the world’s largest alliance of independent hotel brands, extending GHA’s presence across key gateway cities including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Okinawa.

GHA Expands in Japan Through Tokyu Hotels Partnership

Global Hotel Alliance, which represents 50 independent hospitality brands worldwide, has formalised an agreement with Tokyu Hotels & Resorts Co., Ltd. (THR), operator of the TOKYU HOTELS portfolio owned by Tokyu Corporation.

Under the agreement:

  • More than 40 Tokyu-operated hotels in Japan will join GHA DISCOVERY
  • The properties will gain access to GHA’s 34+ million global members
  • GHA strengthens its network in Asia, with a sharper focus on Japan

The addition spans beach resorts, premium business hotels and lifestyle-led brands under the TOKYU HOTELS umbrella.

Portfolio Coverage Across Japan’s Key Cities

Tokyu Hotels operates properties in major destinations including:

  • Tokyo
  • Osaka
  • Kyoto
  • Okinawa

Core brands include:

  • The Capitol Hotel Tokyu
  • TOKYU HOTEL
  • TOKYU RESORT HOTEL
  • EXCEL HOTEL TOKYU
  • TOKYU REI HOTEL

The group also operates its “Distinctive Selection” collection, including lifestyle concepts such as STREAM HOTEL and STORYLINE, targeting experience-driven travellers.

Japan remains one of the world’s strongest inbound tourism markets. In 2025, the country welcomed 42.7 million international visitors, with Tokyo ranking among the most visited global cities. Sustained demand growth has reinforced the country’s strategic importance for global hospitality alliances.

Strategic Rationale for GHA

According to GHA CEO Chris Hartley, the timing aligns with Japan’s continued tourism surge and increasing international air connectivity.

For GHA, the agreement:

The integration allows Tokyu Hotels to leverage GHA’s shared technology platform and cross-brand loyalty infrastructure.

Tokyu Hotels’ International Strategy

Founded in 1960, Tokyu Hotels has long positioned itself around Japanese service culture and contemporary comfort.

The group was also among the founders and former owners of Pan Pacific Hotels Group in 1989, and continues to maintain marketing cooperation for select properties in Tokyo and Kyoto.

THR President Takashi Takei described the alliance as a natural evolution of its international strategy, particularly as inbound demand into Japan remains strong.

Rooted in Shibuya, one of Tokyo’s most commercially dynamic districts, Tokyu Hotels aims to use the GHA platform to:

  • Increase exposure to global travellers
  • Enhance loyalty-driven bookings
  • Position its portfolio as a gateway to Japanese hospitality

Why It Matters

Japan’s tourism rebound has shifted from recovery to sustained expansion, supported by:

  • Strong inbound demand from Asia-Pacific and North America
  • Currency-driven competitiveness
  • Major event and convention traffic
  • Continued global interest in cultural and experiential travel

For GHA, strengthening coverage in Japan addresses a key geographic gap within its alliance network.

For Tokyu Hotels, participation in GHA DISCOVERY provides:

  • Access to a 34+ million-member database
  • Cross-brand customer acquisition
  • Data-sharing and loyalty technology integration

In a market where global chain penetration is rising, domestic groups aligning with international alliances reflects a broader competitive strategy shift.
