Google plans to bring paid hotel offers into its AI-powered trip-planning experience, with IHG Hotels & Resorts named as an upcoming partner in the company’s Direct Offers program.
Alphabet disclosed the partnership during its second-quarter 2026 earnings call. While discussing new ways to generate advertising revenue from AI search, Google chief business officer Philipp Schindler said Direct Offers was gaining momentum. He added that partners including IHG would soon be able to surface special offers as travelers plan trips.
The announcement puts one of the world’s largest hotel groups inside Google’s emerging commercial layer for AI Mode. Through the conversational search experience, travelers can research destinations, compare options and refine their plans.
However, Google has not said when IHG’s offers will become available. It has also not confirmed which markets will receive them first or which IHG hotel brands will participate. The commercial terms of the arrangement remain undisclosed as well.
How Google Direct Offers Works
Direct Offers allows advertisers to submit promotions and related conditions. Google’s AI can then determine when an offer is relevant to a user who appears ready to make a purchase.
According to Google, the format can present discounts, loyalty benefits, bundles and other incentives. Importantly, brands do not have to make the same offer available to every customer.
The program began as a retail pilot before expanding into travel. On its Direct Offers product page, Google says travel partners will soon be able to show exclusive hotel rates during AI-assisted trip planning.
In addition, hotel advertisers will be able to manage offers through Google Ads and Hotel Center.
Google Expands Advertising Inside AI Search
The IHG announcement comes as Google provides more details about advertising within its generative AI search products.
One format, called Highlighted Answers, allows sponsored links to appear within lists generated by AI Mode. Google first publicly detailed the format at Google Marketing Live in May. At the time, it used an advertisement for language-learning applications as an example of how sponsored links could appear among AI-generated recommendations.
Google said during the earnings call that Highlighted Answers was showing early signs of user engagement. Meanwhile, the company is testing contextual links based on a user’s conversation.
Google is also using its Gemini models to match advertisements with longer and more complex searches.
What This Means for Hotel Advertising
These changes represent a significant evolution of the familiar search-ad model.
Traditionally, commercial messages appeared above or below organic search results. Now, however, they can become part of the AI-assisted research process itself. That includes moments when travelers are comparing hotels, destinations and other travel options.
For hotel companies, the development could create a new channel for promoting direct-booking rates and loyalty benefits as consumers formulate their travel plans.
At the same time, it could intensify competition among hotel groups, independent properties and online travel agencies. All will be competing for visibility within AI-generated travel results.
IHG’s Role Remains Unclear
IHG’s precise status within the Direct Offers rollout remains unclear.
Google described IHG as one of the partners that will soon participate. However, it did not say that IHG was the first hotel group selected. Nor did it indicate that the arrangement was exclusive.
Google has also not publicly characterized the hotel program as invitation-only.
These distinctions matter because Google’s existing materials suggest that access could eventually extend beyond a small group of launch partners. The company says AI Max and Performance Max advertisers can create Direct Offers through Google Ads. Meanwhile, hotel advertisers can use established travel-advertising systems such as Hotel Center.
A New Commercial Layer for Hotel Search
For now, IHG’s participation provides the clearest indication yet that paid hotel promotions are moving into Google’s conversational trip-planning experience.
The bigger question is how broadly—and how quickly—Google will open the opportunity to the wider hotel industry.
If the program expands as planned, hotel brands and online travel agencies could increasingly compete not only for traditional search visibility, but also for placement within the AI-powered conversations shaping travelers’ booking decisions.
