From Chance to Success: A Career Built on Passion and People. Interviewing Matthew Zhou, Area General Manager, Shenzhen Marriott Hotel Nanshan
In this exclusive interview, Matthew Zhou, Area General Manager for Marriott Hotels in Shenzhen, shares insights into his remarkable journey in hospitality — from an unexpected career start to leading one of the city’s most dynamic hotel portfolios. With over two decades of experience, he reflects on the values that define great service, the evolving trends in China’s hotel landscape, and the philosophy that continues to guide his team toward excellence.
1. Tell us about your journey — how did it all start?
My hospitality journey began in 1996 at the Shangri-La Traders Hotel Shenyang. I originally accompanied a friend to their interview, but the hotel ended up offering me the role of Chief Concierge. That’s how I stepped into this industry, a pleasant surprise that opened a new and rewarding chapter in my life.
2. What made you decide to pursue a career in the hospitality industry?
It was the warm and friendly working environment, as well as the supportive atmosphere among colleagues. Marriott’s culture of “Putting People First” truly resonates with me, it creates a strong sense of belonging. Moreover, since hospitality is a service-oriented field involving constant interaction with people, it requires meticulous service procedures and detailed planning. That precision and dedication to service are what fascinate me and motivate me to continually strive for excellence.
3. What attractions would you recommend to hotel guests?
Our hotel boasts an excellent location in the heart of Shenzhen’s Nanshan CBD, where many new commercial complexes have recently opened. I always recommend that our guests start exploring right from our doorstep. It’s only about a ten-minute walk to the newly opened MixC Shenzhen Bay Phase II. This new development features exciting brands and popular photo spots that our guests love. It’s also home to numerous fantastic restaurants. I make it a point to try a new one every weekend as part of my personal culinary journey. So far, I’ve visited around twenty different restaurants and cafés.
4. What is the USP (Unique Selling Proposition) of the hotel? How has the hotel positioned itself in this competitive market?
Our prime location in Nanshan CBD offers exceptional convenience. The area is surrounded by leading tech giants such as Tencent, Lenovo, and Baidu, as well as iconic landmarks like Spring Bamboo (Chun Sun) and the Spring Cocoon (Chun Jian) Sports Center. We’re also close to Shenzhen Bay Port and Shenzhen Talent Park. With seamless connectivity to major shopping districts and green spaces, we aim to offer guests a vibrant urban experience complemented by serene natural escapes.
What truly sets us apart is our distinctive design. The entire Zhongzhou SCC building was designed by Adrian Smith, the visionary architect behind the Burj Khalifa. Our interiors, crafted by Hong Kong’s CCD, beautifully incorporate elements from Lingnan’s mountainous and coastal landscapes. In our 43rd-floor lobby, you’ll find leather walls inspired by lychee blossoms, elevator screens that echo mountain ranges, and a grand ballroom that evokes the sea. The lounge showcases wooden sculptures such as “Build” and “Running Horse”, both iconic representations of our design philosophy.
We also take pride in our strong Marriott Bonvoy membership program and our culture of thoughtful, attentive service, creating memorable experiences for our guests, time and again. Wonderful Hospitality. Always.
On top of that, we love connecting with our guests and media friends through various events, both online and offline. This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. To mark this milestone, we’ll host a series of year-end events to thank our valued customers and supporters.

5. In your opinion, what factors contribute to excellent customer service?
We live by the philosophy of our founder, J. Willard Marriott: “Take care of the associates, and they will take care of the customers.” This people-first belief is at the heart of Marriott’s culture and has been the foundation of our success for more than 98 years. By investing in our associates’ well-being and growth, we empower them to deliver heartfelt, exceptional service — fulfilling our brand promise of Wonderful Hospitality. Always.
6. How do you motivate the staff to give their best each day?
I believe in four key approaches. First, we prioritize our associates’ physical health — only with good health can they perform at their best. Second, we care for their mental well-being, especially in hospitality, where maintaining a positive mindset is essential for delivering exceptional service. Third, we provide competitive compensation and benefits, along with clear career development paths — including cross-departmental training and seamless internal transfers across Marriott hotels — helping team members build long-term careers within the Marriott family.
Personally, I’ve always had one aspiration: when I retire one day, I hope to look back with pride at the number of outstanding general managers I’ve had the privilege to mentor. That, to me, would be the most rewarding achievement.
7. What new trends is the hotel witnessing?
Shenzhen’s hospitality landscape is becoming increasingly dynamic, with many new high-quality hotels entering the market. This healthy competition inspires us to continuously elevate our standards and innovate. We’ve noticed guests seeking more personalized and meaningful experiences. The market is becoming more segmented and experience-driven. In China, the integration of new technologies such as WeChat services, in-room projection displays, and service robots is reshaping the guest journey, making it more seamless and interactive. Meanwhile, the Food & Beverage sector is also evolving rapidly, with a stronger focus on quality, creativity, and local dining culture.
8. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Having spent the past 13 years in Shenzhen, I’ve developed a deep connection with this city. Its growth, energy, and unique spirit have shaped both my professional journey and personal life. It’s been incredibly rewarding to witness Shenzhen’s transformation, and I feel proud to be part of its continued evolution.
In the next five years, I aim to further deepen my roots here, strengthening Marriott’s brand presence and culture in the market while delivering even more exceptional experiences for our valued Bonvoy members and guests. As Area General Manager, I’ll continue driving performance, innovation, and digital transformation across our Shenzhen portfolio. My goal is to lead with passion, ensuring we take care of our guests with genuine service and support our associates in their career growth.
9. What are your interests outside of work?
Outside of work, I focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, fitness keeps me energized, focused, and patient. I’m also a fan of Chinese animation, especially stories featuring 仙侠人物 (immortal heroes), which often convey values like integrity and perseverance. Recently, I’ve developed quite an interest in Pop Mart collectibles, especially Labubu and Twinkle Twinkle. They bring small moments of joy to my day and remind me of the importance of staying curious. These hobbies help balance the demands of my role and keep me inspired both personally and professionally.
10. What advice would you give to young people joining the hospitality industry?
For young professionals entering this field, my advice is to embark on this journey with patience, passion, and a genuine desire to grow. Learn to listen, stay positive, and remain focused, especially when faced with challenges. As the saying goes: “坚持不一定成功,但放弃注定失败.” (Persistence doesn’t guarantee success, but giving up ensures failure.)
