Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok Unveils 150th Anniversary: Unfolding Legacies
Built in 1876 and ideally located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Mandarin Oriental, has been delighting guests ever since.

Asia’s first grand hotel, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok launches an 18-month celebration

Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, the Kingdom’s first luxury hotel and one of Asia’s most storied hospitality icons, is stepping into its 150th year with the launch of a landmark celebration under the theme Unfolding Legacies.

Recently crowned World’s Best Hotel by The Daily Telegraph (2024), awarded Three Keys by the MICHELIN Guide, and featured in La Liste 2025 as one of the world’s finest hotels, the legendary property is reaffirming its role as a global symbol of heritage and hospitality while charting the future of luxury.

A Heritage that Defined a Nation’s Luxury Standard

Since opening in 1876 as the Kingdom of Siam’s first hotel, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has been a pioneer in hospitality—introducing electric lighting to Thailand, opening the country’s first riverfront hotel spa and wellness centre, and pioneering butler service. These hallmarks of innovation remain at the heart of the guest experience today.

18 Months of Celebration, Six Chapters of Storytelling

From November 2025 to March 2027, the hotel will host an 18-month journey through six themed “Celebration Chapters,” each exploring a facet of its legacy:

  • Legacy: Origins and milestones of Thailand’s first hotel.
  • People: The visionaries, guests, and colleagues who shaped the journey.
  • Service: Stories behind its legendary hospitality.
  • Culture: Ties to art, literature, music, and cultural exchange.
  • Craft: Culinary and design mastery, reimagined for the future.
  • Innovation: Forward-thinking design and technology to define the next 150 years.

Each chapter will be expressed through culinary, wellness, ritual, and cultural collaborations, inviting guests to engage with the hotel in new, immersive ways.

A Global Celebration Begins in Bangkok

The anniversary commences on 22 November 2025 with two grand occasions:

  • Opening Luncheon, graciously presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
  • Gala Dinner, featuring a once-in-a-lifetime culinary showcase by the Club des Chefs des Chefs—the personal chefs of world leaders. Guests will dine on reimagined ceremonial dishes once served to monarchs and presidents, accompanied by Thai performance art and orchestral music.

Tables (THB 288,000 net for nine guests plus one chef) are strictly limited, with net proceeds benefitting the Ratchasuda Foundation, supporting education and empowerment for persons with disabilities. Guests will also be invited to bid on bespoke anniversary-inspired creations from luxury maisons, renowned Thai artists, and exclusive Mandarin Oriental experiences worldwide.

A Tribute to Past, Present, and Future

“It is a profound honour to lead Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok through this defining chapter,” said Anthony Tyler, General Manager and Area Vice President, Operations. “Unfolding Legacies is both a tribute to our extraordinary journey and a bold step into the future. Every detail of the 150th celebration reflects the elegance of our past and the promise of what lies ahead.”
