Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao – Review
Earlier this week, I stayed at Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao and experienced the Sofitel brand firsthand.
The Scene
Sofitel is Accor’s flagship luxury brand, founded in 1964. Known for blending French art de vivre, the philosophy of living life the French way, with the unique character of each destination, Sofitel has established itself as a symbol of refined elegance with a global presence. Its identity remains deeply rooted in French culture, from design and hospitality to gastronomy.
As part of Accor’s top-tier portfolio, Sofitel is positioned alongside prestigious brands such as Raffles, Fairmont, and MGallery. The group continues to strengthen Sofitel’s ultra-premium positioning to compete with luxury icons like The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Waldorf Astoria, and InterContinental.
Earlier, I had the opportunity to stay at Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao and experience the Sofitel brand firsthand. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this is more than just a hotel, it’s a carefully curated experience. The service was warm and intuitive, the design sophisticated yet welcoming, and the culinary offerings a celebration of both local flavors and French culinary heritage.
It’s a brand that doesn’t just promise luxury, it delivers it thoughtfully, with character and consistency.
The Hotel
Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao is one of Accor’s flagship luxury properties in Shanghai. Since its opening in 2016, the hotel has artfully combined classic French architecture with the elegance of contemporary Shanghai. Its striking exterior features a grand façade, ornate domes, gilded columns, and a cascading fountain, offering a sense of arrival that is both opulent and timeless.

The Location
The hotel is strategically located within the Hongqiao Transportation Hub, offering seamless connectivity to both Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Hongqiao High-Speed Railway Station. Each is approximately 5 kilometers away, just a 6-minute drive, or a 20-minute walk to the railway station.
The nearby Hongqiao Railway Station is also a major metro interchange, served by Lines 2, 10, and 17, providing convenient access to key districts across Shanghai.
For business travelers, the hotel is adjacent to the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC), just 700 meters away, or a comfortable 15-minute walk.

Dining
Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao offers four distinctive dining venues, each reflecting the brand’s signature blend of French flair and local flavor:
• Kwee Zeen (B1) is an interactive, Parisian-style all-day-dining restaurant overlooking a serene waterfall. Modern and spacious, it offers a refined yet relaxed atmosphere for enjoying international cuisine throughout the day.

• Le Chinois (1/F) presents a contemporary take on Cantonese cuisine with subtle Parisian influences. The restaurant includes eight private dining rooms, many with waterfall views, and serves a creative menu of elevated Chinese dishes in an elegant setting.

• Le Bar (1/F) is a chic Parisian lounge ideal for unwinding over afternoon tea—currently featuring a seasonal collaboration with Häagen-Dazs—along with classic cocktails and a curated wine selection.

• Club Millésime, located on the top floor, is an exclusive executive lounge offering a tranquil environment, personalized service, and a selection of complimentary drinks and light refreshments. It’s a refined space designed for both productivity and relaxation.
Room & Suite
The hotel features 356 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, ranging from 44 m² to 68 m². Each space is designed for comfort and sophistication, with high ceilings reaching up to 15 feet, Sofitel’s signature MyBed™ bedding, a separate bathtub and shower, Lanvin bath amenities, complimentary Wi-Fi, minibar, and in-room safe. Selected rooms and suites also feature luxury French-brand toiletries from L’Occitane or Hermès.

Guests staying in Club Millésime rooms or Prestige Suites enjoy exclusive access to Club Millésime, a private lounge offering elevated services, refreshments, and a serene space for both work and relaxation.

Meeting & Event
The hotel is an ideal venue for events of all scales, anchored by the grand Perrault Ballroom, which spans 1,030 m² and features an impressive 10-meter-high ceiling. This elegant space can accommodate up to 1,180 guests, making it perfectly suited for large conferences, gala dinners, and social celebrations.
In addition, the hotel offers seven versatile meeting rooms, all equipped with state-of-the-art technology and adaptable layouts to suit a variety of business and event needs.

Wellness & Leisure
The hotel’s wellness offerings include a fully equipped fitness center, complete with personal training services and a variety of fitness classes tailored to different needs and levels.
Guests can also enjoy a 25-meter indoor swimming pool with an adjoining terrace for relaxation, as well as a separate children’s pool. For deeper rejuvenation, the hotel features full-service spa facilities, all thoughtfully designed to provide a tranquil and restorative environment.

Bottom Line
Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao offers a distinctive appeal for travelers who appreciate authentic French luxury rather than standardized Western-style hospitality. True to French elegance, the hotel features soft lighting, marble and wood finishes, and subtle fragrances thoughtfully curated throughout the property, especially in the opulent lobby.
Embracing Parisian cultural richness, the hotel impresses with its stunning architecture, spacious rooms equipped with the signature Sofitel MyBed™, a high-quality fitness center and pool, and an excellent breakfast experience, special recognition to Kwee Zeen. Service throughout the property consistently reflects the brand’s commitment to refined hospitality.
In keeping with Sofitel’s identity, where dining serves as an ambassador of French culture, both Le Chinois and Kwee Zeen offer exceptional culinary experiences that are sure to satisfy discerning guests.
The hotel also boasts expansive meeting, ballroom, and banquet facilities, complemented by a tranquil spa and pool area, ideal for unwinding after a busy day.
Its location within the Hongqiao Transportation Hub is particularly advantageous for travelers attending events at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC), or for those with early flights and train departures.
While the hotel’s strategic location makes it a preferred choice for business travelers and event attendees, it equally serves as a splendid option for leisure visitors seeking a culturally rich and luxurious retreat for holidays or weekend getaways.
Overall, Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao stands out as a compelling choice for travelers in search of high-end, culturally meaningful experiences.
