The Hari Hong Kong partners with White Cube to present ‘Thresholds,’ a contemporary Indonesian art exhibition with themed menus inspired by Indonesia

A cross-cultural collaboration The Hari—White Cube blending contemporary Indonesian art and culinary inspiration.

The Hari Hong Kong has partnered with White Cube Hong Kong to present Thresholds, a group exhibition featuring works by contemporary artists whose practices are rooted in or connected to Indonesia.

On view across the hotel’s public spaces until 31 March 2026, the showcase offers guests and visitors a rare opportunity to experience art that explores life’s profound cycles — birth, death, and transformation — through multiple artistic lenses.

Exploring the Interwoven Cycles of Life and Spirit

Curated by Galuh Sukardi, an independent curator based in Indonesia, Thresholds spans a wide range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, textiles, drawing, and silverware. The participating artists — Galuh Anindita, Arahmaiani, Christine Ay Tjoe, Nadiah Bamadhaj, Kei Imazu, Ines Katamso, I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih (Murni), Citra Sasmita, and Jennifer Tee — represent diverse generations and artistic visions.

Each artist reflects a personal journey of transformation, whether spiritual, political, physical, or mythological. Together, their works form a dialogue about duality — the coexistence of light and dark, and how opposing forces can exist in harmony rather than conflict.

Rooted in Tradition, Reimagined for Today

Drawing from the symbolic black-and-white Balinese poleng cloth, Thresholds captures the spirit of balance and duality central to Indonesian philosophy. Traditionally used to adorn sacred objects and trees, the cloth’s criss-crossing pattern serves as a visual metaphor for equilibrium — a recurring theme across the exhibition.

Amid modern ecological, spiritual, and social challenges, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on transformation and renewal in contemporary contexts while staying anchored in Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

A Culinary Tribute to Indonesian Flavours

To mark the exhibition, The Hari Hong Kong is introducing a limited-time menu inspired by Indonesian cuisine. At The Lounge, where artworks from Thresholds are displayed, guests can enjoy dishes such as chicken karaage wrapped in pandan leaf and pandan coconut panna cotta, complemented by the Threshold Special, a pandan-flavoured cocktail or mocktail.

The pandan leaf, an essential ingredient in Indonesian cooking, is celebrated not only for its aroma and vibrant colour but also for its spiritual symbolism — representing purity and often used in Canang Sari, daily Balinese offerings.

Extending The Hari–White Cube Partnership

Thresholds continues the successful collaboration between The Hari and White Cube, which also co-hosts The Hari Art Prize — an annual initiative that supports emerging artistic talent.

The award, which began at The Hari London, has grown into a signature event for The Hari brand. Irene Bradbury, Global Director, Artist Liaison at White Cube, serves on the London prize panel, while Wendy Xu, Managing Director, Asia at White Cube, joins the judging panel for The Hari Art Prize 2026 in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Thresholds is concurrently exhibited at White Cube Hong Kong until 10 January 2026, offering art enthusiasts the chance to experience the show across both venues.
