Hyatt launches Thompson Shanghai Expo, its first Thompson hotel in Asia Pacific — a design-driven hub celebrating culture, creativity, and city life

A dynamic blend of design, culture, and cosmopolitan energy along Shanghai’s World Expo riverfront

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has officially opened Thompson Shanghai Expo, marking the Asia Pacific debut of its iconic lifestyle brand. Set in the city’s revitalised World Expo district, the hotel channels Shanghai’s creative pulse — where art, architecture, and urban energy collide.

With 254 rooms and suites, striking event spaces, and three distinct dining and nightlife concepts, Thompson Shanghai Expo becomes a vibrant base for travellers seeking cultural connection and style with substance.

A Landmark Setting in the New World Expo District

Located within Expo Place, a new riverfront complex that fuses art, retail, and leisure, the hotel places guests at the heart of Shanghai’s emerging cultural zone. It’s moments from leading attractions such as Mercedes-Benz Arena, China Art Museum, and Shanghai Expo Culture Park — alongside high-end shopping and metro links for effortless exploration.

“Thompson Hotels began as a cultural home base in New York. Now, at 25 years, it’s inspiring to see the brand take root in equally creative cities like Shanghai,” said Amar Lalvani, President and Creative Director of Hyatt’s Lifestyle Group.

Pavilion-Inspired Architecture and Interiors

Designed by Chicago-based Goettsch Partners (GP), the curved tower’s dynamic glass façade captures the shimmer of the Huangpu River — symbolising the dialogue between nature and the city.

Inside, SilverFox Studios (Singapore) reinterprets the Expo 2010 pavilions in a “pavilion-within-a-pavilion” concept, blending industrial steel, warm wood, concrete, and velvet for a layered sensory experience. The result is pure Thompson — bold, tactile, and beautifully composed.

Refined Rooms with a Modern Industrial Edge

Every room offers floor-to-ceiling river or city views, hardwood floors with hand-tufted rugs, and bespoke furnishings. Marble bathrooms, Dyson hairdryers, and curated in-room playlists enhance the residential-style comfort. Guests can unwind with signature turndown touches and amenities that balance indulgence with practicality.

Distinctive Dining and Rooftop Culture

BAOBAO Lounge

A relaxed social spot overlooking the square, BAOBAO serves steamed delicacies, light bites, and local drinks — perfect for casual gatherings.

Fishermen’s Pavilion

This all-day restaurant celebrates Yangtze Delta cuisines, creatively re-imagined by Shanghai-born chefs. The 19th-floor setting offers river views and private dining rooms for special occasions.

TOTS Rooftop Club

Perched on the 20th floor, TOTS sets the city’s evening rhythm with panoramic vistas, live DJs, crafted cocktails, and a mix of Italian and Asian tapas.

Curated Cultural Experiences

In signature Thompson fashion, the hotel curates bespoke programming to spark social and creative exchange:

  • Arts collaborations with Shanghai’s design community
  • EXPO Riverside runs with local running collectives
  • Clink & Connect socials at TOTS
  • Beats & Connect Saturdays at BAOBAO Lounge for music-driven networking

Stylish Venues for Events and Celebrations

With eight event spaces, including Thompson Hall — one of the Expo district’s largest ballrooms at 1,100 sq m — the hotel accommodates up to 1,150 guests. The Oval, an architectural steel-and-glass venue, adds a contemporary edge for fashion or creative showcases. Each space combines natural light, advanced tech, and Thompson flair.
