Luxury Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan debut marks Hilton’s continued leadership and record-breaking growth across Greater China and Mongolia, as the company accelerates toward doubling its footprint in the region
Hilton (NYSE: HLT) today announced the grand opening of Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan, marking a milestone moment as the company celebrates 888 trading hotels across Greater China and Mongolia. The achievement underscores Hilton’s position as the largest and fastest-growing international hospitality company in the region, with plans to double its presence in the coming years.
Since opening its first hotel in Mainland China in 1988, Hilton has expanded its room inventory nearly tenfold in just over a decade. The company continues to strengthen its luxury and lifestyle portfolio, with several landmark signings recently added to its pipeline — part of a strategy to surpass 100 luxury and lifestyle hotels across Greater China in the near future.
Upcoming highlights include Waldorf Astoria Shenzhen (2028), a new landmark in the city’s Super Headquarters Base; LXR Hotels & Resorts in Tianjin (2029), a bespoke experience celebrating the city’s East-meets-West heritage; Conrad Zhoushan (2028), offering rare access to the sacred Putuo Mountain; Hyssan Hotel Quanzhou, Curio Collection by Hilton (2026), inspired by the Maritime Silk Road; and Curio Collection by Hilton in Shanghai Yuqiao (2026), the brand’s first in the city.
These developments align with Hilton’s broader vision to surpass 250 luxury and lifestyle hotels across Asia Pacific, reinforcing its global network of more than 1,000 trading properties and 500 in the pipeline.
“Reaching 888 hotels in China is a powerful symbol of Hilton’s deep-rooted commitment to this dynamic market,” said Alan Watts, president, Asia Pacific, Hilton. “Our bold plans to double our presence reflect our optimism for China’s long-term growth as we enter a new era of hospitality.”
Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan rises in the vibrant Qiantan District of Pudong, on the southern stretch of the city’s new Bund. The hotel offers 204 elegant rooms and suites, all starting from 52 square meters, with panoramic river views and private balconies. Culinary highlights include Arame, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant with local flair; Fu Cheng, where Michelin-starred chef Justin Yang presents refined Min cuisine; the exclusive Starlight Room chef’s table; and the iconic Peacock Alley, a hallmark of the Waldorf Astoria experience.
As the third city worldwide to host two Waldorf Astoria hotels, Shanghai joins Dubai and Doha, reaffirming the brand’s growing stature in global luxury hospitality. “Our growth in China is a testament to the trust of our partners, the dedication of our teams, and the loyalty of our guests,” said Qian Jin, president, Greater China and Mongolia, Hilton.
Hilton’s business in China today spans 11 award-winning brands across 280 destinations, employing 70,000 team members and supporting millions of travelers through Hilton Honors, its award-winning loyalty program.
