Discover the grand opening of Spago Shanghai at The St. Regis on the Bund—offering California-inspired cuisine, immersive design, and skyline views
On 12 November 2025, The St. Regis on the Bund, Shanghai marked a milestone with the official launch of Spago Shanghai, the first China outpost of Wolfgang Puck’s globally celebrated dining brand. The opening ceremony was attended by Wolfgang Puck, Founder of Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group; Byron Puck, Director of Food, Beverage & Hospitality for Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group; and Alan Jin, General Manager of The St. Regis on the Bund, together with invited guests and media.
The evening featured an exclusive culinary showcase led by Wolfgang Puck himself, offering visitors a firsthand look at the creativity behind Spago’s iconic dishes and marking a significant moment for the brand’s debut in China.

A Vision Brought to Life by Wolfgang Puck
Founded in 1982, Spago remains a symbol of the California Dream—a blend of luxury, creativity, and relaxed sophistication. Speaking at the grand opening, Wolfgang Puck shared:
“Opening a Spago restaurant in Shanghai is a dream come true. This is a city where tradition and innovation thrive together. We look forward to bringing Spago’s spirit to this incredible culinary destination.”

Design: A Journey Into Imagination and Hollywood Drama
Inspired by John Jacob Astor IV’s futuristic novel
The design concept of Spago Shanghai draws from the 1894 novel A Journey in Other Worlds by John Jacob Astor IV—a story filled with imagination and futuristic exploration. This inspiration translates into interiors that blend Hollywood glamour, dramatic stagecraft, and a touch of fantasy.
A Cinematic Entrance
Guests step into a softly lit space with gleaming travertine floors, painted artistic surfaces, and elegant bronze walls. The lounge and bar shine as focal points, defined by:
- A pavilion-style suspended ceiling
- Wood-inlaid marble flooring
- A curved bar wrapped in striped glass
The result is a welcoming environment that captures both spectacle and comfort.

A Dining Hall as a Grand Stage
The central dining room evokes the golden age of Hollywood. Its open kitchen—crafted from wood, bronze, and marble—functions as a live culinary theatre, inviting guests to watch the artistry behind the dishes.
A Terrace Designed as a Garden Library
Spago’s outdoor terrace extends the experience with lush greenery, textured seating, and flowing curtains that blur the line between inside and out. With soft light refracting through glass panels, the terrace becomes a tranquil escape overlooking the city and Huangpu River.
Cuisine: California Meets Shanghai With Imagination
Spago’s culinary philosophy is rooted in contemporary California cuisine—local ingredients, seasonal creativity, and global influences. Led by Executive Chef Luke Omarzu, the Shanghai team blends world-famous Spago classics with Shanghai-exclusive dishes, all prepared with a farm-to-table spirit.
