Eddy Zhu General Manager of The Shanghai EDITION during an exclusive leadership interview
Eddy Zhu, General Manager of The Shanghai EDITION, shares his vision for the hotel’s future in an exclusive interview with Red Bird Travel News

As one of Shanghai’s most distinctive lifestyle luxury hotels, The Shanghai EDITION has successfully blended historic architecture with contemporary design since opening in 2018. Located at the north end of the Bund, the hotel has established itself as a destination not only for international travelers but also for Shanghai’s vibrant dining, nightlife, and cultural scene.

Leading the property is General Manager Eddy Zhu, a Shanghainese hotelier who believes a luxury hotel should evolve alongside the city it calls home. Under his leadership, The Shanghai EDITION continues to strengthen its position through innovative culinary collaborations, immersive lifestyle programming, and personalized guest experiences that appeal to both global visitors and local residents.

In this exclusive interview with Red Bird Travel News, Zhu shares his vision for the hotel, discusses emerging luxury travel trends, explains how Marriott’s people-first philosophy shapes the team culture, and reveals why authentic local experiences are becoming the defining hallmark of modern luxury hospitality.

Q&A with Eddy Zhu, General Manager of The Shanghai EDITION

What do you do at The Shanghai EDITION?

As General Manager, my role is to bring together every aspect of the guest experience—from operations and service to culture, design, and commercial performance. My focus is to ensure every interaction reflects the spirit of EDITION: authenticity, sophistication, enchantment, and passion, while inspiring our team to consistently exceed expectations.

What motivates you about working in hospitality?

Seeing guests leave with unforgettable memories is incredibly rewarding. I’m equally motivated by developing people—watching team members grow in confidence, build successful careers, and deliver experiences they’re proud of.

What have been your key achievements so far, and what are your priorities for the hotel’s future?

Our goal has always been to strengthen The Shanghai EDITION’s position as one of the city’s leading lifestyle luxury hotels—not only for international travelers but also for the local Shanghai community.

Being a Shanghainese myself, I believe the hotel should reflect the city’s evolving culture rather than simply exist within it. We will continue creating locally relevant experiences that celebrate Shanghai’s creativity, culinary scene, and social energy, while delivering highly personalized hospitality that keeps both returning guests and local residents discovering something new every time they visit.

What attractions would you recommend to hotel guests?

Being located on Nanjing East Road and overlooking the Bund gives our guests immediate access to some of Shanghai’s most iconic landmarks. Beyond the Bund, I would recommend exploring Shanghai’s world-class museums and galleries, as well as its vibrant culinary and creative scene.

What is the hotel’s unique selling proposition? How has the hotel positioned itself in this competitive market?

The Shanghai EDITION combines beautifully restored historic buildings with contemporary design, offering an experience that celebrates Shanghai’s heritage while embracing modern luxury. Our distinctive dining venues, vibrant nightlife, and highly personalized service position the hotel as a lifestyle destination rather than simply a place to stay.

Could you tell us about some new initiatives that the hotel has recently unveiled?

This year, we’ve introduced several initiatives that further strengthen The Shanghai EDITION as a lifestyle destination.

Our ongoing collaboration with Burger & Lobster has evolved into PLAY with FLAVOR, featuring exclusive seasonal menus, immersive installations, and interactive experiences that extend beyond the restaurant into the surrounding neighborhood.

At the same time, we are celebrating our eighth anniversary with TURN 8 INTO ♾️, a ten-day city-wide celebration featuring signature dining experiences, guest bartender takeovers, Brunch Rave 2.0, Electric Circus, and a curated collection of iconic dishes and cocktails.

These initiatives reflect our commitment to creating experiences that continually surprise both travelers and the local community.

What sustainable practices does the hotel follow?

Sustainability is embedded into our daily operations rather than treated as a standalone initiative. We continue reducing single-use plastics, improving energy efficiency, and minimizing food waste while working with responsible suppliers wherever possible.

Equally important, we encourage our teams and guests to make thoughtful choices that contribute to a more sustainable future without compromising the luxury experience.

How do you motivate your team to perform at their best every day?

People perform at their best when they feel trusted, valued, and supported. At Marriott, our Put People First philosophy is something I truly believe in.

I focus on recognizing achievements, providing opportunities for development, and creating clear career pathways so associates can grow both personally and professionally. Celebrating successes together, listening openly, and fostering an inclusive culture help create an environment where everyone feels empowered, proud of what they do, and motivated to deliver their very best every day.

What experience do you have with marketing and promotions?

Marketing today is about creating cultural relevance rather than simply promoting a hotel. We work closely with Marriott’s global and regional teams to develop storytelling, partnerships, and lifestyle-driven programming that resonate with today’s luxury travelers.

From seasonal campaigns and culinary collaborations to community-led experiences and city-wide celebrations, our goal is to ensure The Shanghai EDITION remains an active part of Shanghai’s cultural and social landscape rather than simply a luxury hotel.

Today’s luxury travelers are looking for experiences that feel authentic, local, and highly personalized. Wellness, cultural immersion, culinary discovery, and meaningful social connections continue to shape travel decisions.

Increasingly, guests also value hotels that function as lifestyle destinations where they can dine, socialize, work, and discover new experiences—all under one roof.

What advice would you give to young people considering a career in hospitality?

Stay curious, remain humble, and never stop learning. Hospitality is ultimately about people, and genuine care for others will always be your greatest strength.

Final Thoughts

Under Eddy Zhu’s leadership, The Shanghai EDITION continues to redefine luxury hospitality by placing equal emphasis on exceptional accommodation, immersive lifestyle experiences, and meaningful connections with the city it calls home. Rather than viewing the hotel solely as a destination for overnight stays, Zhu envisions it as a vibrant social hub where travelers and locals alike can experience the evolving spirit of Shanghai.

As luxury travel increasingly shifts toward authenticity and personalization, The Shanghai EDITION appears well positioned to remain one of the city’s most influential lifestyle hotels—one that celebrates both its historic setting and Shanghai’s dynamic future.
