Ngaro Track Walk In Comfort Opens for Bookings in Queensland

Bookings are open for Queensland’s new Ngaro Track Walk In Comfort—an immersive multi-day Whitsunday Island hiking experience combining culture, nature, and expert guiding

Bookings are officially open for the Ngaro Track Walk In Comfort, Queensland’s newest multi-day hiking experience on the breathtaking Whitsunday Island. Delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government and World Expeditions, this landmark 32-kilometre trail offers an immersive journey through pristine landscapes, rich Indigenous heritage, and world-class coastal scenery.

Launching its first departures in May 2026, the experience marks a major milestone for ecotourism in the Whitsunday region — and a new benchmark for culturally respectful, environmentally sensitive walking holidays in Australia.

A Fully Supported 3-Day / 2-Night Wilderness Walk

Appointed following a competitive tender in 2024, World Expeditions—through its Australian Walking Holidays division—will operate the guided version of the trail as a three-day, two-night Walk In Comfort experience.

Travellers can expect:

  • Expert wilderness guides
  • All meals prepared fresh on the trail
  • Purpose-built infrastructure
  • Comfortable, low-impact accommodation
  • Scenic boat transfers from Airlie Beach or Shute Harbour

Designed for walkers who want deep immersion without carrying heavy packs, this fully supported model allows guests to enjoy the track’s scenic and cultural highlights with ease.

A Trail Through Nature, Culture, and Storytelling

Developed by the Queensland Government, the 32-kilometre Ngaro Track showcases the full diversity of Whitsunday Island — the largest island in the Whitsunday Islands National Park and an integral part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

Hiking Highlights

Walkers can expect:

  • Ancient rainforest and lush vine thickets
  • Rocky headlands and secluded bays
  • High lookouts, including the towering Whitsunday Craig
  • Linkages to iconic destinations such as Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet
  • Ample opportunities to swim in the island’s famous azure waters

The trail offers an experience that is both physically rewarding and deeply restorative, with scenery that shifts between rugged wilderness and sweeping ocean vistas.

Created in Partnership With the Ngaro People

The Ngaro Track was proudly developed in close collaboration with the Ngaro People, the Traditional Owners of Whitsunday Island. Their deep connection to Country is woven meaningfully throughout the walking experience.

Cultural Significance on the Track

  • Interpretive totem posts carved from hardwood feature artwork and stories shared by Ngaro families.
  • The storytelling reflects knowledge, values, and ancestral ties passed down over countless generations.
  • Cultural interpretation is a core part of the guided walk experience, with World Expeditions committed to placing Ngaro culture at the forefront.
  • The project supports ongoing employment, training, and business opportunities for First Nations communities.

Michael Buggy, Director of WETG Australasian Operating Companies, emphasised this partnership:
“We’re privileged to work with the Ngaro People to help shape this spectacular walk. The Ngaro Track represents our mission to honour and protect the landscapes we explore.”

Setting a New Standard for Queensland Ecotourism

Queensland Minister for the Environment and Tourism, Andrew Powell, says the Ngaro Track represents a major step forward for sustainable nature-based tourism.

“The Ngaro Track will soon become a must-do walking experience for the Whitsunday region,” he said.
“It’s the perfect example of Queensland’s ecotourism potential — and the tip of the iceberg for what’s to come.”

The Queensland Government aims to deliver 45 ecotourism experiences by 2045, with the Ngaro Track providing a benchmark for future projects.

New Purpose-Built Campsites for a Low-Impact Stay

Two elevated, environmentally sensitive campsites have been developed for both guided and independent walkers:

  • Bowarri yamba (Moon Camp)
  • Dhula yamba (Tree Camp)

These campsites feature:

  • Communal cooking and gathering areas
  • Spectacular views over remote bays and beaches
  • Minimal-impact design to protect surrounding environments

For Walk In Comfort Guests

World Expeditions walkers enjoy:

  • Raised camp beds
  • Comfortable tents with pillows provided
  • Freshly cooked dinners and breakfasts
  • Picnic lunches served on the trail
  • Camps fully prepared on arrival

The guided walk is priced from AUD $2,195 per person, inclusive of boat transfers.

Independent Walkers Welcome — With Limits to Preserve Wilderness

Independent hikers can also access the track, carrying their own tents, sleeping equipment, food, and cooking gear.

To maintain the remote, peaceful nature of the experience, numbers are capped at 15 independent walkers per section per day.

Independent walker permits for the 2026 season are now open:
