The Grand Luang Prabang will become a Melia hotel
The onetime palace of a Lao prince is moving into the portfolio of hotels managed by the Spanish hotel group, Meliá Hotels International. The Grand Luang Prabang will be the first hotel in Laos to join Melia Hotels International’s growing presence in the region.
The Luang Prabang property will undergo a 12-month rebranding process to become the first member of the Melia Collection in Southeast Asia. Meliá Collection hotels were launched in 2022 to bring together some of the group’s most distinctive and one-of-a-kind properties. As the one-time palace of a Lao prince, the Lao property has the kind of unique story that distinguishes a collection hotel. With its rich culture and architecture the destination of Luang Prabang has held UNESCO World Heritage status for two decades.
“For the Meliá family, we are extremely happy to begin our journey in Laos with this extraordinary hotel,” said Gabriel Escarrer, Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International. “We expect destinations like Luang Prabang to become more popular with modern travelers who are seeking new and unique experiences, and I’m sure that this hotel, with its unmistakable sense of place, will enable guests to fully enjoy the destination.”
Situated on lush riverside in Luang Prabang, The Grand Luang Prabang is a 75-key property spread out over eight buildings, comprising of a 1920-built palace and a collection of annexes. The property commands the high ground of a six-hectare bluff on a bend of the Mekong with sweeping views of mountains and river, and majestic sunsets.
Once known as Xiengkeo Palace, the roots of the property reach deep into French colonial-style architecture, albeit with decidedly Laotian touches. Prince Petcharath, the aristocrat who once lived on the grounds, is well-known among Laotians and held a tenure as prime minister during World War II.
Balconies from guest rooms overlook manicured gardens and lotus ponds, and the environs beyond. Interiors ooze charm through traditional wooden furnishings and timeless appointments. The property also features an expansive swimming pool in the gardens. Meliá plans to add Spanish hospitality to the mix, while ensuring the hotel retains its distinct character.
“Luang Prabang is a hidden gem in Asia, steeped in so much history and culture with a myriad of ancient temples and monasteries,” said Ignacio Martin, Managing Director Asia Pacific at Meliá Hotels International. “We want to immerse guests in the story here through a hotel that is truly part of the beautiful essence of this destination.”
Under Meliá’s umbrella the hotel will undergo a renovation and refurbishment over the next year, remaining operational throughout.
Meliá Hotels International landed in Asia for the first time in the 1980s with the opening of Meliá Bali. Since then, the region has become strategically important for the group, where it currently has a portfolio of 50 properties (operating and in the pipeline) in Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, China and Laos.
The first Lao property expands on a partnership with Thailand-based TCC Group that began with the opening of Meliá’s first hotel in Vietnam over two decades ago.

Following the traditional ribbon-cutting, parties celebrated the symphony of both cultures. Initiated with a Mohegan prayer ceremony by the Mohegan Tribal Chief, Lynn Malerba, it seamlessly transitioned into a toast by Chairman Gessner. A captivating time-lapse video then chronicled the INSPIRE project’s evolution, setting the stage for a series of enthralling performances; a Mohegan drum ensemble, a mesmerizing act by a Korean a cappella group and spellbinding magic performances, spotlighting the rich tapestry of cultural harmony showcased throughout the evening.
“It’s a thrill to see this wonderful journey made possible by the dedication of all INSPIRE employees and the relentless support of the Mohegan Tribe,” said Chen Si, president of INSPIRE. “I am also grateful to all government agencies, communities and partners for their steadfast commitment throughout the project’s development. INSPIRE will set a new standard for resorts supported by innovation and creativity, delivering inspiring spaces and cultural experiences, and we will together contribute to the development of Incheon Yeongjongdo as a world-class tourist destination.”
Since its soft opening on Nov. 30, INSPIRE has opened a 5-star hotel with a total of 1,275 rooms; INSPIRE Arena, an inaugural multi-purpose indoor venue with a capacity of up to 15,000 people; Aurora, a 150m-long digitally immersive street; INSPIRE signature restaurants, including Michael Jordan’s Steak House; a year-round indoor water dome, Splash Bay’s swimming pool; and state-of-the-art MICE facilities. On Feb. 3, INSPIRE Casino, the country’s largest exclusive casino for international visitors, opened. INSPIRE Mall is scheduled to be fully operational in March with a mix of carefully curated branded shops, diners and community spaces. Additional facilities such as Discovery Park, an outdoor entertainment space, the largest immersive content exhibition center in Korea, and a giant food court are expected to open by the year’s first half.

Situated in Thonglor, the property offers 241 beautifully appointed rooms and suites, and seamlessly weaves traditional Thai craftsmanship with modern international influences to create an unparalleled destination that mirrors the essence of one of Bangkok’s most vibrant districts.
Widely regarded as one of Bangkok’s most upscale neighbourhoods, Thonglor is awash with chic bistros, upscale bars, and onsen spas; InterContinental Bangkok Sukhumvit sits amidst the bustle of this energetic area. The hotel’s design draws inspiration from the context of the city, bringing memories from the past into the present and reflecting this in the design details. The elegance of Tor-mue, a traditional intricate hand weaving technique, is interwoven through the hotel’s design and touchpoints.
“InterContinental Bangkok Sukhumvit is designed for the modern luxury traveller seeking cultural rich experiences,” said Prin Pathanatham, General Manager, InterContinental Bangkok Sukhumvit. “Embodying the spirit of the Thonglor district where we are located, one will find international influences weaved into the hotel stay experience and contemporary design. Traditional Thai craftsmanship and contemporary flair are also integrated into the guest experience.”
The hotel offers three signature dining options including AVA Brasserie, which presents a brasserie-style international menu inspired by Pan Am’s key destinations including London, New York, Tokyo, Miami, Frankfurt and Bangkok, a nod to the brand’s origin. The Lobby is a stylish all-day lounge that celebrates the connectiveness of Thailand and Japan, with original Thai tea on offer alongside a traditional Japanese green tea ceremony. The Lobby will offer exclusively blended coffee by Sarnies and tea options from well-known tea houses which include Char Flower Tea, TWG, and Peace Oriental Teahouse as well as a selection of Thai craft chocolates from KanVeLa. Finally, Rogues a high-energy cocktail bar, will present curated cocktails, exclusive sake selection and whiskey collections, and live jazz performances.
A selection of suites, including the impressive Presidential Suite – which boasts indoor and outdoor areas – are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a 55-inch Smart TV, Chromecast, Bluetooth audio, soundbar, and motion sensors to prevent energy wastage. Bathroom amenities are from luxury European brand, Byredo in large format instead of miniatures.
Modern travellers lead diverse lives, and InterContinental Hotels & Resorts acknowledges the need for seamless transitions throughout their day. To address this, the brand is committed to helping guests “shape shift” through their day. New initiatives include scientifically backed food and beverage programmes aimed at helping guests reduce travel fatigue while ensuring dining options reflect differing guest needs throughout the day. At InterContinental Bangkok Sukhumvit, a Sleep Well Program is curated to induce relaxation and promote sound sleep. This includes a pillow and pillow spray menu, calming ambient lighting and a bedtime tea set. An iHome PowerClock Glow in each room further promotes healthy sleeping rituals by creating a calming environment using a combination of light and sound therapy.
THE SPA by HARNN will present a Japanese-Thai inspired concept. Signature treatments include The Origami, which is inspired by the traditional Japanese paper folding and Thai garland knitting; the therapist will employ a combination of massage techniques, including Japanese Shiatsu and Thai soothing massage. The newest jewel in an exquisite global portfolio brings the brand’s celebrated traditions and signature hallmarks born at New York’s finest address of Fifth Avenue and 55th Street to the country’s luminaries. Guests are greeted in the lobby by a curved sculptural grand staircase and a crystal chandelier depicting pages of a history book, an interpretation of the country’s storied past and the new being written. Designed by Kristina Zanic, the hotel showcases artwork that explores the combination of subtle tradition and modernity with contemporary, minimalist works adorning the walls and guestrooms.
The St. Regis brand’s founding family, the Astors, were known for seeking out exquisite locations around the globe for their collection of homes, and The St. Regis Riyadh reflects their love for residential properties. EDITION Redefines Luxury With Its First Southeast Asia Hotel in Singapore
The Singapore EDITION – the first Southeast Asia outpost in the luxury stable – has soft opened in the Lion City.
The 204-room hotel is located just off the west end of Singapore’s upper Orchard Road. This once bucolic country lane lined with fruit orchards and pepper and nutmeg plantations is, today, transformed into a heaving stretch of restaurants, tree-shaded boulevards and marbled emporia bustling with bold-faced named fashion and lifestyle brands.
Accessed from Cuscaden Road, the hotel’s main entrance with its cobbled stone driveway opens into a private, white-hued oasis that stands singularly apart from the bustle of upper Orchard Road.
At the core of the architecture and interior design of The Singapore EDITION is seamless access to nature with sweeping vistas and greenery integrated throughout, including a skypark and lushly planted, sunken garden that offers a tranquil escape from Singapore’s bustling Orchard Road shopping district.
Flanking the soaring white aerie of the lobby and reception is a high vaulted-ceilinged, timber-lined restaurant spearheaded by Josh Niland. Aptly named FYSH at EDITION, this lofty space is the acclaimed Australian restaurateur and multi-award-winning chef and author’s first restaurant outside of Australia, and it features an impressive sustainable seafood-focused steakhouse menu alongside responsibly sourced vegetables and meats.
For those wishing to extend the evening’s libations, an inconspicuous side-door leads to the adjoining Punch Room – EDITION’s signature bar concept that is a global brand in itself.
The spacious guest rooms unfold over six floors. In every guest room, warm white rugs clad the customised white oak-planked floors while decorative pots of orchids and thick drapes frame the broad bay windows. The rooms also feature deep-seated sofas, and hand-sewn damask throws that swathe the beds.
The Singapore EDITION is offering an exclusive opening preview rate of 15% off flexible rates, available for a limited time only. Room rates start from SGD$680+++ per room, per night. Terms and conditions apply.

Intercontinental Chiang Mai Mae Ping Ushers in New Era of Luxury
The highly anticipated opening of InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping in Chiang Mai’s historic district marks the first milestone in a strategic partnership between IHG Hotels & Resorts and Thailand’s leading integrated lifestyle real-estate group, Asset World Corporation (AWC).
When designing the conversion project from the prestigious Imperial Mae Ping Hotel, Thailand’s leading design firm PIA Interior skilfully layered traditional Lanna heritage with the hotel’s own storied past, resulting in welcoming and engaging spaces that honour the beloved hotel that had welcomed generations of holidaymakers over its 30-year-long history.
Guests will feel an instant connection to the site as they are greeted by melodic gong chimes – a soul-setting ritual that connects them to the story of the adjoining Wat Chang Kong, a beautifully preserved 600-year-old stupa built by a local gong-making community. The manicured lawn in front of the temple will host regular dance shows and performances as part of the resort’s cultural programming.
Surrounded by Chiang Mai’s iconic landscapes and draped in greenery, InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping prioritises connectivity to nature and culture. Travellers can choose from 240 elegant rooms and suites facing the old town or the misty slopes of Doi Suthep mountain.
On their doorstep, they will find a host of iconic landmarks such as Chiang Mai’s walking streets, the buzzing night bazaar and the historic Tha-Pae Gate dating back to the 13th century.
Inside the stately accommodations, soft modern minimalism meets Lanna-inspired décor. From lacquered panels and wood-carved sculptures to beaten metal accents, precious handcrafted objects commissioned from local artisans pay tribute to traditional Lanna crafts, while spacious zen bathrooms with a plunge bathtub offer a serene space to unwind.
Guests staying in Premium Rooms and suites will enjoy Club InterContinental benefits, including a deluxe breakfast served in a private zone, daily afternoon tea and evening cocktails.
Flavours of the north
In addition to growing fresh produce at its own organic garden, the hotel works with carefully vetted local suppliers, including bee and cacao farms, as well as partnering with the Royal Project foundation, a Thai non-profit organisation founded by King Bhumibol Adulyadej to improve the quality of life of the hill-tribe people.
The restaurants and bars at InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping promise to be a showcase for northern Thailand’s rich flavours. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Gad Lanna evokes a traditional market with seasonal, organic ingredients spun into comforting northern dishes using traditional cooking methods.
Overlooking the hotel’s main pool, Kam Lobby Lounge brings the spirit of Yi Peng Lantern Festival alive through evocative décor, while the menu offers light meals, coffee and organic Monsoon Tea produced in the mountains of Northern Thailand, with expertly crafted cocktails served after dark to a soundtrack of live jazz.
On the 16th floor, its signature restaurant Hong’s Chinese Restaurant & Sky Bar pays homage to the historic Lanna-Chinese trade links in décor and on the menu. Panoramic vistas of Doi Suthep and the city are paired with fiery Sichuan, Cantonese and Taiwanese dishes, while the signature Teresa Teng tea ceremony is a tribute to the famous Taiwanese singer who was once a regular at the hotel.
Chiang Mai’s cultural and natural heritage
At InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping, immersive activities layered with nuances from the local culture offer in-depth exploration on property and beyond. Experiences on offer range from tea blending workshops and local chocolate tasting to adrenaline-filled activities such as white-water rafting, jungle walks and hot air ballooning followed by a lakeside Champagne picnic.
Reflecting the hotel’s goal to become Chiang Mai’s cultural hub, the hotel will also be hosting rotating art exhibitions and music performances curated by the hotel’s Concierge team in partnership with The Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture of Chiang Mai University. Meanwhile, the brand’s signature Planet Trekkers programme for the young will offer such activities as clay figurine marking, banana leaf folding and coconut shell crafts.
For destination weddings, social celebrations and corporate functions, the hotel is opening with a collection of glamorous event venues, including the Grand Ballroom, five smaller event rooms and a verdant central lawn set within the temple grounds.
Leisure facilities include an outdoor swimming pool shaded by tropical trees, and a state-of-the-art fitness centre where guests can admire décor inspired by Lanna folk play while working out. Travellers can also rejuvenate with pampering spa treatments at The l i Spa, including the signature Tok Sen experience using traditional massage techniques of the north in combination with an herbal compress to soothe the muscles.
Travellers can choose from a collection of exclusive discovery packages, with the opening offer available from THB 6,400+++ per night. IHG One Rewards members receive an extra 10% off.

W Sydney Hotel Opens
W Hotels today announced the opening of the W Sydney hotel. Located in a dramatic curved structure rising over Darling Harbour, W Sydney is set to become a coveted destination for travelers and Sydneysiders alike, bringing new energy and a modern take on luxury to the city and harbour waterfront.
“W Sydney marks our W Hotels brand’s triumphant return to Sydney, a long-awaited addition to our robust portfolio in Australia, following our recent debuts in Melbourne and Brisbane,” said George Fleck, Vice President and Global Brand Leader of W Hotels.
From the moment guests step past the W sign, inspired by the Australian Waratah flower, they are on a design-led journey. The copper-clad entry pays homage to subterranean Sydney and its disused railway tunnels, and an illuminated vertical promenade sweeps guests up into Living Room, a vivid blue space that reinvents the conventions of a traditional lobby by turning it into a social hub. Embracing a ‘Future Noir’ theme, Living Room is punctuated by an electric blue circular bar and nest-like seating that reference the Australian Bowerbird, a larrikin of the bird world.
W Sydney’s 588 guestrooms, including 162 suites, draw inspiration from the hotel’s harbourside location and nearby beaches, exuding marine-chic in their nautical white and navy-blue palette and undulating walls that echo the sails of yachts in the marina below.
Bathrooms are rendered in deep oceanic blue and walk-in wardrobes feature a burst of graphic, inflorescent red and pink Waratah flowers for a playful touch.
W Sydney brings four new dining and bar venues across three exciting levels. AWAY Spa is an oasis of concrete calm designed to leave guests feeling rested and recharged in an idiosyncratic but nevertheless deeply restorative space.
The hotel’s FIT Gym is complete with Technogym equipment, whereas WET Deck is a place to chill poolside with stellar views of Darling Harbour. The 30-metre open-air infinity pool showcases a giant jellyfish motif crafted from vivid glass mosaic tiles.
Located just steps from Sydney’s International Convention Centre, the hotel features 1300-square-meters of exceptional event space across eight versatile rooms.
“W Sydney reimagines luxury for a new era, creating a vibrant new scene for Sydneysiders and visitors to the city,” says Craig Seaward, General Manager of W Sydney, “I can’t think of a better location for our new W hotel than Sydney’s amazing harbour. We can’t wait to welcome guests again and again.”
