United Airlines Heathrow Flights Expand as Airline Marks 35 Years
United Airlines Heathrow flights reach a major milestone as the airline celebrates 35 years of service from Heathrow Airport. Since launching its first route from Washington, D.C. to London in April 1991, United Airlines has transported more than 58 million passengers and over 2.2 million tonnes of cargo across the Atlantic.
Today, the airline operates up to 20 daily nonstop flights between Heathrow and its major U.S. hubs, reinforcing London’s role as a key gateway in United’s global network.
Travellers arriving at Heathrow Airport may also consider pre-booking an airport transfer from Heathrow to central London, particularly during peak arrival periods when taxi queues can be long.

New Premium Aircraft on the London–San Francisco Route
To mark the strategic importance of Heathrow within its network, United has selected the route between London and San Francisco as one of the first to receive the airline’s newest premium aircraft configuration.
United Airlines Heathrow routes will debut the airline’s upgraded Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner featuring the Elevated interior. The aircraft introduces several enhancements, including the new United Polaris Studio suites, larger seatback entertainment screens, Bluetooth connectivity at every seat, and redesigned cabin layouts.
The first flight featuring the updated cabin is scheduled to depart Heathrow for San Francisco on 1 May 2026, operating as flight UA900.
Quote from Management
Karolien De Hertogh, Director of Sales for the UK and Ireland at United Airlines, said the anniversary reflects the airline’s long-term commitment to the United Kingdom.
She noted that Heathrow remains the airline’s largest station outside the United States and enables connections through United’s seven U.S. hubs to hundreds of destinations across the Americas and beyond.
Meanwhile, Joanna Taso, Aviation Director at Heathrow Airport Holdings, said the partnership between Heathrow and United Airlines has supported decades of transatlantic travel while strengthening trade and tourism links between the UK and the United States.
United Airlines Operations in the United Kingdom
Beyond London Heathrow, United Airlines also operates additional services from the United Kingdom and Scotland.
From Edinburgh, the airline runs year-round flights to Newark Liberty International Airport and nearly year-round services to Washington Dulles International Airport, along with seasonal flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
In addition, seasonal summer service from Glasgow to Newark is scheduled to resume from 9 May through October 2026, restoring a route previously operated by the airline until 2019.
These routes provide additional options for travellers flying between the United Kingdom and the United States while supporting regional connectivity across the Atlantic.
