WTTC Introduces Independent Certification for Hotel Sustainability Basics
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) is strengthening its Hotel Sustainability Basics programme by transitioning it to an independent third-party certification scheme, marking a major step in the evolution of global hotel sustainability standards.
The move aligns the programme with new European Union requirements for environmental claims and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Accreditation Framework, providing hotels with greater transparency, independent verification and a globally recognised pathway to demonstrate their sustainability performance.

A New Chapter for Hotel Sustainability
Since launching in 2022, Hotel Sustainability Basics has become one of the hospitality industry’s most widely adopted sustainability frameworks. Developed by the industry for the industry, it establishes 12 practical actions that hotels can implement to improve environmental and social performance.
The framework covers key areas including energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, carbon emissions, community engagement and nature protection. Designed for hotels of every size and category, it provides an accessible foundation for sustainability across the global accommodation sector.
The transition to an independently verified certification programme represents the next phase of the initiative, strengthening credibility as governments, consumers and businesses increasingly demand transparent sustainability claims.
Meeting New Regulatory Expectations
The enhanced certification programme responds to the EU Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (Directive (EU) 2024/825), which introduces stricter standards for environmental marketing claims.
By incorporating independent third-party certification and aligning with the GSTC Accreditation Framework, Hotel Sustainability Basics aims to provide hotels with internationally recognised sustainability assurance while helping build trust among travellers, corporate buyers, governments and investors.
Hotels already participating in the programme are not required to take immediate action. WTTC, together with verification partners including SGS, will provide guidance and support throughout the transition.
Introducing Basics Plus
Later this year, WTTC will introduce Basics Plus, developed with and endorsed by the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (WSHA).
The new programme will offer hotels the next stage of their sustainability journey, complementing the existing framework with independently verified performance standards.
Together, Hotel Sustainability Basics and Basics Plus will form the foundation of WSHA’s Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality, providing accommodation providers with a structured roadmap from essential sustainability practices to more advanced environmental performance.
Industry Leaders Welcome the Move
Gloria Guevara, President & CEO of WTTC, said the programme has already demonstrated that sustainability can be both practical and scalable across the hospitality industry.
“Hotel Sustainability Basics has demonstrated that sustainability can be practical, achievable and scalable, with thousands of hotels already taking meaningful action around the world. By strengthening the programme through independent certification, we are giving hotels a globally recognised framework that reflects evolving regulatory expectations while building greater trust and confidence in sustainability claims.”
She added that, together with Basics Plus, the initiative provides hotels of all sizes with a clear pathway to continue advancing their sustainability efforts.
Randy Durband, CEO of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), described the transition as an important milestone for hospitality.
“This marks an important moment for the hospitality industry, strengthening alignment around credible and consistent approaches to hotel sustainability. The GSTC accreditation of WTTC’s Hotel Sustainability Basics will reflect what can be achieved through a shared commitment to meaningful progress.”
Strong Industry Backing Drives Global Adoption
The programme has received broad support from governments, destinations, hotel companies and travel industry partners, including the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, Jin Jiang, Radisson Hotel Group and HBX Group.
Its success has been driven by a straightforward framework built around practical, achievable sustainability actions that hotels can implement regardless of size or location. By establishing a common baseline, the initiative has accelerated global adoption while demonstrating the effectiveness of industry collaboration.
WTTC says the move to independent certification signals a new level of alignment across the hospitality sector, bringing together the expertise of WTTC, GSTC and WSHA to create a trusted sustainability framework that can support hotels worldwide.
Why This Matters
Sustainability standards are becoming increasingly important as governments tighten regulations and travellers seek greater confidence in environmental claims. WTTC’s transition to independent certification positions Hotel Sustainability Basics as a globally recognised benchmark, helping hotels demonstrate credible sustainability performance while preparing for evolving regulatory requirements. The addition of Basics Plus also creates a clear progression pathway, enabling accommodation providers to move beyond foundational practices towards measurable, independently verified sustainability achievements.
