Marriott Bonvoy and Japan Airlines introduce reciprocal elite status matching, exclusive rewards, and enhanced travel benefits across flights and hotel stays.

Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott International’s award-winning travel program, and the JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) program from Japan Airlines (JAL) have launched a strategic travel loyalty partnership that delivers exclusive benefits across both air travel and hotel stays.

The announcement builds on the existing relationship between the two companies, which already allows members to convert Marriott Bonvoy points into JAL miles and vice versa. However, the enhanced collaboration introduces reciprocal elite status matching and mutual member benefits for the first time.

This milestone marks Marriott Bonvoy’s first comprehensive loyalty alliance with a Japanese airline. Likewise, it represents JAL’s first strategic partnership with a global hospitality group. As a result, members of both programs will enjoy greater recognition, enhanced rewards, and a more seamless travel experience.

A New Chapter in Travel Loyalty

The expanded partnership introduces reciprocal elite status recognition and new opportunities for members to accelerate their status across both loyalty programs. Consequently, travelers who belong to both Marriott Bonvoy and JAL Mileage Bank can enjoy benefits from each program simultaneously.

The collaboration creates a more integrated journey by connecting hotel stays with air travel rewards. In turn, members gain additional opportunities to unlock premium travel privileges while progressing more quickly through elite membership tiers.

Notably, Marriott Bonvoy members will automatically receive JAL FLY ON Points after linking their accounts, even without taking a flight. The number of FLY ON Points awarded depends on the member’s Marriott Bonvoy Elite status. Similarly, the Marriott Bonvoy Elite status granted to JAL Mileage Bank members depends on their existing JAL FLY ON Status.

Meanwhile, Basic JAL Mileage Bank and Crystal members can earn Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status after meeting qualifying stay requirements. JMB Sapphire members and above will automatically receive equivalent Marriott Bonvoy Elite status.

The enhanced alliance comes as travel loyalty programs continue to grow in importance. According to Marriott Bonvoy’s Loyalty Trends Report 2026, travelers remain highly engaged with both hotel and airline loyalty programs. In particular, Japanese travelers increasingly seek to maximize value by combining benefits across multiple loyalty memberships.

“Our enhanced alliance with JAL is an exciting milestone that brings together two iconic travel brands to create more rewarding journeys for our members,” said John Toomey, Chief Commercial Officer, Marriott International, Asia Pacific excluding China.

He added that Marriott’s hyperlocal collaboration strategy enables members to enjoy greater recognition, faster rewards, and more seamless travel experiences while discovering new destinations.

Shingo Nishida, Executive Officer and Senior Vice President of the Mileage and Lifestyle Business Division at Japan Airlines, said:

“This collaboration represents an exciting step forward in how we reward and engage our most valued customers. By partnering with Marriott Bonvoy, we are extending the benefits of JAL beyond the skies, creating new opportunities for our members to enjoy greater travel experiences and progress more quickly through our membership tiers.”
