Marriott International has strengthened its leadership team in the South Pacific with the appointment of John Douglas as Area General Manager, Pacific Islands, a move that comes as the company continues to expand and enhance its presence across some of the region’s most sought-after resort destinations.
Based in Fiji, Douglas will oversee operations across Marriott International’s Pacific Islands portfolio, including flagship properties such as Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, Sheraton Denarau Villas, Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji, and The Westin Fiji Golf Resort & Spa following its reopening. His responsibilities will also extend across Marriott International’s wider portfolio in Fiji, Samoa and New Caledonia.
The appointment places an experienced Marriott veteran at the helm of a region that continues to attract growing international visitor demand, particularly from Australia, New Zealand, North America and Asia-Pacific source markets.
Douglas brings more than 26 years of experience with Marriott International, having built a career that spans both hotel operations and financial leadership. Since joining the company in 1999 at Brisbane Marriott Hotel, he has held senior positions across Australia, Europe, the Caribbean and the United States, gaining experience in diverse hospitality sectors ranging from luxury resorts and golf destinations to wellness centres, casinos and Marriott Vacation Club properties.
Most recently, Douglas served as Senior Area Director of Finance Operations for Australia, New Zealand and Pacific (ANZP), supporting Marriott International’s extensive regional portfolio and helping drive operational performance across multiple markets.
His appointment reflects Marriott International’s continued focus on strengthening leadership capability as competition intensifies across the Pacific hospitality sector and resort operators seek to capitalise on sustained leisure travel demand.
Commenting on the appointment, Jason Nuell, Regional Vice President, Australia, New Zealand & Pacific for Marriott International, described Douglas as a respected leader whose experience across operations, finance and commercial strategy positions him strongly for the role.
“John’s collaborative leadership style, deep understanding of the region and long-standing commitment to Marriott International will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our presence across the Pacific,” Nuell said.
The leadership transition comes at a significant time for Marriott International’s Pacific Islands business, with Fiji continuing to serve as a major tourism gateway for the South Pacific and several resort assets entering new phases of growth and development.
With extensive regional knowledge and a proven track record across multiple hospitality disciplines, Douglas is expected to play a key role in guiding Marriott International’s Pacific operations through its next chapter of expansion and guest experience enhancement.
