Lijiang, Yunnan, China

Just returned from the successful Mekong Tourism Forum (MTF) held in the beautiful city of Lijiang.  MTF is an annual event dedicated to the tourism industry in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS).  Luang Prabang, Laos is going to be the host next year.  I am looking forward to it already.

China passes the flag to Laos. Gaciously receiving the flag is Mr. Khom Douangchantha, Director General of Tourism Marketing Department, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Laos.

This year, MTF 2024, held in Lijiang, China, witnessed tourism professionals and stakeholders coming together to propel the sustainability, resilience, and visionary tourism of the GMS amid the evolving travel landscape.

Delegates had a busy day, starting with Opening Remarks by Mr. Zhang Zheng, Vice Minister, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, China (fifth from left); and Welcome Remarks by Ms. Suvimol Thanasarakij, Executive Director of the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (second from right).

Delegates also participated in engaging panel discussions on cultural integration and international cooperation to propel Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) tourism growth.

Panel Discussion. Mr Wouter Schalken, Senior Sustainable Tourism Development Specialist of Asian Development Bank, as moderator (far right).

Delegates delved into Lijiang’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a captivating field study. Delegates also gained an understanding of the town’s smart management practices and its successful integration into a thriving tourism industry.
