South Korean travelers choose Tokyo, Shanghai and other top weekend getaway destinations in Japan and China, according to Agoda’s 2026 travel data

South Korean Travelers Prioritize Time-Efficient Travel as Japan and China Dominate Weekend Getaways

As travelers increasingly seek to maximize experiences without taking additional leave, a growing preference for short, time-efficient holidays is reshaping outbound travel from South Korea. New data from Agoda shows nearby destinations in Japan and China are benefiting most from this shift, with travelers choosing convenient weekend escapes that offer strong value for both time and money.

Based on accommodation searches made on Agoda by South Korean travelers between January and May 2026 for Friday-to-Sunday stays during late July and early August, Tokyo ranked as the most popular overseas weekend destination. Fukuoka, Osaka, Shanghai and Nagoya completed the top five, highlighting the continued appeal of short-haul travel.

At a Glance

  • Tokyo ranks as the top overseas weekend destination for South Korean travelers.
  • Fukuoka, Osaka, Shanghai and Nagoya complete the top five.
  • China is gaining momentum, helped by visa-free entry for South Korean passport holders.
  • Yantai recorded more than seven times the search growth year-on-year.
  • Dalian saw nearly five times more searches, while Qingdao posted a 10% increase.
  • Agoda says one in five South Korean travelers plans trips lasting just one to three days in 2026.

Japan Continues to Lead Short-Haul Weekend Travel

Japanese destinations claimed the top three positions in Agoda’s rankings, reinforcing their popularity for quick overseas escapes. Convenient flight connections, the continued weakness of the Japanese yen, cultural familiarity and a broad mix of shopping, dining, concerts and entertainment continue to make Japan an attractive choice for South Korean travelers.

The findings reflect a growing preference for destinations that can be enjoyed over a single weekend without requiring extended annual leave.

China Emerges as a Fast-Growing Weekend Destination

China is also becoming an increasingly attractive option for South Korean travelers seeking short international breaks. Agoda attributes part of this growth to China’s visa-free entry policy for South Korean passport holders, making spontaneous weekend travel more accessible.

Shanghai ranked fourth overall and has become particularly popular among younger travelers. The city’s appeal has been boosted by the growing “wanghong” beauty trend, with influencer and celebrity content showcasing Chinese-style makeovers, professional styling sessions and photoshoots across social media and YouTube.

Coastal Chinese Cities See Strong Search Growth

Beyond Shanghai, Agoda’s search data shows several Chinese coastal cities experiencing notable increases in interest.

Yantai, in Shandong Province, recorded more than seven times the search volume compared with the previous period. Improved air connectivity and its reputation as one of China’s leading wine-producing regions are contributing to its growing popularity.

Dalian experienced nearly five times more searches as travelers increasingly seek destinations with historical and cultural significance. The city is home to the Lüshun District Court, where Korean independence activist Ahn Jung-geun stood trial, as well as the Lüshun Russo-Japanese Prison, where he spent his final days. These landmarks have helped position Dalian as a destination for history-focused travel experiences.

Qingdao also saw a 10% increase in searches. The coastal city remains well known for its seaside atmosphere and as the birthplace of Tsingtao Brewery.

Outside the top five, Taipei and Hong Kong also featured prominently among South Korean travelers. Taipei offers an appealing mix of urban attractions, mountain scenery and coastal experiences within a compact area, while Hong Kong continues to attract visitors with its renowned food scene and enduring cultural appeal.

Shorter Trips Reflect Changing Travel Priorities

According to Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report, 22% of South Korean respondents intend to take trips lasting between one and three days this year, highlighting the increasing popularity of shorter holidays that fit around busy work schedules.

Alex Park, Country Director for South Korea at Agoda, said the findings demonstrate how travelers are looking for convenient escapes that maximise their time away.

“Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report found that 22% of South Korean respondents plan to take trips lasting just one to three days this year, underscoring a growing preference for short breaks that are easy to fit into busy schedules without using up too much annual leave. Whether it’s a weekend escape or a short getaway, Agoda is committed to helping travelers find great deals on accommodations, flights, and activities, enabling them to make the most of every journey.”

With access to more than 6 million holiday properties, over 130,000 flight routes and more than 300,000 travel activities, Agoda aims to provide travelers with a single platform for planning both quick weekend escapes and longer holidays.

Why This Matters

The latest Agoda data highlights how outbound travel from South Korea is increasingly being shaped by convenience rather than duration. As flexible travel, visa policy changes and improved regional air connectivity make short international breaks easier to plan, nearby destinations across Japan and China are well positioned to benefit from travelers seeking memorable experiences without sacrificing valuable annual leave.
