Mandarin Oriental has launched MO.RE, a new sustainability platform for its global hotel portfolio.
The platform focuses on three pillars: Resilience, Reconnection and Regeneration. They will guide decisions across the hotel lifecycle, from investment and design to daily operations and guest experiences.
According to the Group, MO.RE marks a shift away from incremental, compliance-led measures. Instead, it aims to strengthen business resilience, support destinations and benefit local communities and ecosystems.
Over the past 15 years, Mandarin Oriental has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 33%. Its colleagues have also contributed more than 80,000 volunteering hours. These achievements form part of the Group’s progress towards its 2030 sustainability targets.
Laurent Kleitman, Group Chief Executive of Mandarin Oriental, said: “Mandarin Oriental’s pioneering spirit has long driven us to advance sustainability in luxury hospitality. MO.RE is a decisive step forward. It moves sustainability from the margins to the core of our business; strengthening resilience, improving operational performance and safeguarding the destinations that inspire our guests and define our hotels. As we grow, MO.RE sets the direction for the business we want to build and the legacy we intend to leave”
Three Pillars of the MO.RE Sustainability Platform
MO.RE brings together three areas that will shape the Group’s sustainability strategy.
Resilience focuses on preparing hotels and destinations for climate risks. Plans include climate-risk profiles for individual properties and a pathway to net zero by 2050. The Group will also improve visibility of Scope 3 emissions across its value chain.
Reconnection aims to bring guests and colleagues closer to nature, culture and local destinations. Planned activities include family programmes, culinary experiences and wellness initiatives. The Group also intends to introduce biodiversity education for younger guests.
Regeneration goes beyond reducing environmental impact. It focuses on supporting ecosystems, local communities, vocational skills and cultural heritage. These areas contribute to the long-term development of destinations.
Kandé Camara, Chief of Staff and Group Director of Sustainability at Mandarin Oriental, said: “The next frontier for luxury hospitality is to use its influence with greater purpose. MO.RE aligns our business decisions with what guests increasingly value: distinctive places, deeper connections to destinations and hospitality that contributes to their future. Our ambition is to make sustainability a business priority, a shared commitment with our partners and a joyful experience for our guests.”
Mandarin Oriental Outlines Group-wide Initiatives
Mandarin Oriental plans to implement MO.RE through Group-wide initiatives and locally tailored programmes.
Under Resilience, each hotel will receive a climate-risk profile. This will identify local environmental risks and adaptation priorities. The Group will also establish a decarbonisation pathway towards net zero by 2050. In addition, it plans to improve the measurement and visibility of Scope 3 emissions.
For Reconnection, initiatives will include a Biodiversity Kids Club. The programme will encourage younger guests to discover and protect nature. The Group also plans to hold annual MO Family Days for colleagues and their families. Culinary and wellness experiences will further connect guests with local destinations.
Meanwhile, Regeneration will cover environmental protection and community development. Planned measures include protecting and restoring priority habitats. The Group also intends to expand vocational education and hospitality career opportunities.
Further initiatives will support artists, artisans and living cultural heritage through arts and crafts programmes. In addition, the Celebrity Fans charity programme will involve Mandarin Oriental ambassadors in supporting community causes.
Through MO.RE, the Group aims to integrate sustainability into business decisions and hotel operations. It also plans to strengthen its engagement with the destinations where it operates.
