The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has unveiled “The Year of Transformation” as its strategic tourism direction for 2027, introducing four strategic moves designed to support “The Winning Goal 2027”.
The strategy aims to strengthen Thailand’s position as “Asia’s No.1 High-Value & Meaningful Destination” by focusing on quality growth, stronger visitor loyalty and wider distribution of tourism benefits.
TAT has set several key targets for 2027, including tourism revenue growth of at least 5% compared with 2026, a 60:40 visitor distribution between major and emerging destinations, and improved competitiveness among Asia’s leading destinations.
Four Strategic Moves to Transform Thai Tourism
The 2027 direction is built around four strategic moves:
- Rebalance Market Portfolio
- Shape Experience Platform
- Build New Growth Engine
- Transform Together
Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said the strategy represents a commitment to reshape Thai tourism around quality, value and long-term competitiveness.
“The Year of Transformation is a clear commitment to reshape Thai tourism around quality, value and long-term competitiveness,” said Ms. Thapanee.
“We’ve moved beyond volume alone, using Thailand’s distinctive strengths to create experiences that earn traveller loyalty, distribute income more widely and generate sustainable value.”
Presented at Rajadamnern Stadium under the theme “The Ultimate Fight: Transform for the Win!”, TAT used Thailand’s historic Muay Thai arena to highlight the need for the tourism sector to adapt, sharpen its strategy and compete in a rapidly changing global environment.
The initiative reflects TAT’s shift from relying primarily on established strengths to creating greater market value from Thailand’s advantages in wellness, culture, gastronomy, meaningful experiences and sustainability.
Rebalancing Markets and Expanding Quality Tourism
The first strategic move, Rebalance Market Portfolio, focuses on creating a more balanced tourism structure across markets, traveller segments and destinations.
TAT will strengthen domestic tourism as a foundation while managing international markets through three approaches:
- Retain: Sustaining growth while expanding quality segments and increasing visitor spending.
- Reshape: Attracting higher-value travellers through wellness, luxury, family and lifestyle experiences.
- Recover: Rebuilding confidence through improved safety, convenience and value.
Meanwhile, Thailand will explore new opportunities in Eastern Europe, Latin America and emerging origin cities. Stronger air and multimodal connectivity will support these expansion efforts.
TAT will also refine its segmentation portfolio around four traveller groups: Mainstream, Experience, High Value and Premium Travellers. Future products will focus on motivations such as gastronomy, culture, nature, wellness, longevity, sport and luxury.
At the destination level, “The Link Plus” initiative will connect suitable markets and traveller segments with 19 priority areas, targeting a 10% increase in international arrivals to these destinations.
Creating More Meaningful Travel Experiences
The second move, Shape Experience Platform, aims to strengthen the Amazing Thailand brand by shifting perceptions from a value-for-money destination to a meaningful destination.
Under the concept “Healing is the New Luxury”, TAT will highlight experiences that support emotional wellbeing, personal enrichment and deeper connections.
The organisation will introduce new characters, “Nong Sukjai” and “Nong Rak Yim”, to communicate Thai charm and create stronger emotional connections with travellers.
For domestic tourism, TAT will promote “365 Thai Thiao Thai – Thiao Dai Thang Pi”, encouraging Thai travellers to explore destinations throughout the year.
TAT will also develop themed experiences based on each region’s identity, expand the UNESCO Thailand Network across 29 areas and more than 55 community tourism destinations, and introduce Signature Destination Branding in Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, Songkhla, Trat and Samut Songkhram.
Building New Tourism Growth Engines
The third move, Build New Growth Engine, aims to convert Thailand’s tourism strengths into new economic value through four Life Economy growth engines.
Theme Product Experience
TAT will develop nine experience categories, led by the planned early-2027 launch of “Unseen Luxperience 2027” for Premium Travellers.
The programme will combine hidden destinations with private and exclusive experiences connected to Thai textiles, gems and jewellery, Thai massage and Muay Thai.
Well-being Tourism
Thailand will position itself as a Global Health & Healing Destination through Medical Excellence, Science-Based Wellness and Science-Based Local Wisdom.
The strategy focuses on helping travellers “Heal Better, Live Longer and Feel Better” through integrated wellness experiences.
Festival Economy
Under “365 Days of Celebration”, TAT aims to position Thailand as a year-round events destination.
The programme will cover international events, Pride celebrations, music festivals such as S2O, Wonderfruit and Tomorrowland, as well as art, design, sport and adventure experiences.
TAT will also elevate cultural events including the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession, Nakhon Phanom Illuminated Boat Procession and Sakon Nakhon Christmas Star Parade towards “Must-Experience in Thailand” status.
Future Sustainability
TAT will expand sustainable tourism destination prototypes to Nan and Wellness Valley areas, extend the CF Hotel low-carbon network and encourage wider adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) assessment framework.
Transforming Tourism Through Collaboration and Innovation
The fourth move, Transform Together, reflects TAT’s evolving role from tourism promoter to tourism ecosystem orchestrator.
The approach recognises that tourism extends beyond leisure travel into wellness, sport, festivals and other special-interest journeys. Stronger collaboration between public and private sector partners will be essential to create higher-value products and experiences.
Through Tourism Value Intelligence, TAT will analyse visitor behaviour and tourism revenue data, supported by 45 domestic offices, two coordination centres and 29 overseas offices.
The organisation is also developing a tourism leadership programme to strengthen industry capability and collaboration. In addition, support for start-ups, technology and artificial intelligence will help improve the traveller journey.
Thailand Targets Higher-Value Tourism Growth in 2027
TAT’s 2027 strategy aims to strengthen Thailand’s competitiveness as the country advances towards becoming Asia’s No.1 High-Value & Meaningful Destination.
The organisation will work across the tourism sector guided by four principles:
- Integrity to build trust
- Safety to strengthen confidence
- Quality to create lasting impressions
- Experiences that inspire visitors to return
Through “Transform Together, Win Together”, Thailand aims to achieve higher-quality tourism growth, distribute income more widely and create stronger benefits for local communities during the next phase of Amazing Thailand.
