British Airways Celebrates 80 Years of UK–US Flights with New Lounge Investments
British Airways is celebrating 80 years of scheduled flights between the United Kingdom and the United States, marking a milestone that began with its very first transatlantic commercial service from London to New York.
The anniversary highlights eight decades of innovation, expansion and investment in one of the world’s busiest aviation corridors. From pioneering long-haul travel in the 1940s to introducing the iconic Concorde and lie-flat business class beds, British Airways has played a major role in shaping modern transatlantic aviation.
Eight Decades of Transatlantic Service
Eighty years ago, British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) operated its first commercial landplane service between London and New York’s LaGuardia Airport. The journey, flown aboard a Lockheed Constellation 049, took nearly 20 hours and included refuelling stops in Shannon, Ireland, and Gander, Canada.
That inaugural service laid the foundation for what has become one of the airline’s most important international markets.
Today, New York remains a cornerstone of the British Airways network, while the airline now serves 27 destinations across the United States, connecting millions of business and leisure travellers each year.
British Airways Reflects on a Historic Milestone
Sean Doyle, Chairman and CEO of British Airways, described the anniversary as an important moment in the airline’s history.
“Reaching 80 years of flying to the United States is a truly proud moment for British Airways. From our very first flight between London and New York to the comprehensive network we operate today, our commitment to connecting people, cultures and commerce across the Atlantic has never been stronger.”
Doyle also noted that 2026 is a significant year for travel, with the United States celebrating its 250th anniversary while also hosting one of the world’s biggest international football tournaments.
He added that British Airways is committed to bringing travellers together for these landmark events while continuing to invest heavily in improving the customer journey.
British Airways Announces Major US Lounge Investments
As part of its wider customer experience strategy, British Airways has unveiled new investments across its airport lounge network in the United States.
The largest project will be a US$15 million redevelopment of its lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
Designed in partnership with global architecture and design firm Gensler, the redesigned lounge will draw inspiration from New Jersey’s coastline and industrial heritage while incorporating British Airways’ contemporary design language.
The upgraded lounge will include:
- A brand-new full-service bar
- Enhanced dining and food service areas
- A significantly improved Concorde Dining space for eligible customers
- Fully refurbished bathrooms and shower suites
- Floor-to-ceiling runway views
- Locally sourced furniture, materials and finishes inspired by New Jersey
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the new lounge scheduled to reopen in 2027.
British Airways has also confirmed plans to invest in lounges at Boston and San Francisco during 2027, forming part of a broader programme of lounge upgrades across both the United States and London Heathrow.
Continuing Investment Across the Airline
The lounge improvements form part of British Airways’ ongoing multi-billion-pound transformation programme designed to modernise every stage of the customer journey.
Key initiatives include:
- Rollout of high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi across the fleet
- Continued improvements in operational performance and punctuality using advanced technology
- Introduction of a redesigned First cabin featuring greater privacy, comfort and premium amenities
These investments are intended to strengthen the airline’s position as one of the leading carriers on transatlantic routes while enhancing both the onboard and airport experience.
Busy Summer Across the Atlantic
British Airways expects to operate more than 20,500 flights to and from the United States during the current summer season.
The airline also says it continues to operate more flights from the United States than any other European carrier, reinforcing the importance of the transatlantic market as demand for both business and leisure travel continues to grow.
British Airways Looks Ahead
While celebrating eight decades of service between the United Kingdom and the United States, British Airways is also looking firmly towards the future.
From upgraded airport lounges and onboard technology to premium cabin enhancements and network growth, the airline’s latest investments demonstrate its long-term commitment to maintaining a leading position in transatlantic aviation.
For travellers, the 80th anniversary is not only a celebration of aviation history but also a glimpse of the next generation of the British Airways travel experience.
