A New Era of Contactless Airport Travel in Doha

Passengers departing from Hamad International Airport can now move through the airport using facial recognition instead of a physical boarding pass, thanks to the launch of Fast Pass by Qatar Airways and technology partner SITA.

The system enables travelers to check in, drop bags, clear security, and board their flight using a single biometric identity. It represents one of the largest deployments of its kind in the Middle East and globally, connecting more than 700 touchpoints into a unified passenger journey.

At a Glance

  • New Fast Pass biometric journey launched at Hamad International Airport
  • Developed by Qatar Airways in partnership with SITA
  • Covers check-in, bag drop, security, and boarding using facial recognition
  • More than 700 airport touchpoints integrated into one identity system
  • Enrollment takes seconds via mobile app or self-service kiosks
  • Expansion planned for transfer passengers and additional airlines

How the Fast Pass Biometric Journey Works

Fast Pass is designed to simplify every step of airport processing:

  • Enrollment: Passengers register once via the Qatar Airways mobile app or at a self-service kiosk in the terminal
  • Identity creation: A facial scan links the traveler to their booking
  • Seamless processing: The face becomes the boarding credential across all checkpoints
  • Bag drop: SITA self-service bag-drop units verify identity automatically
  • Security & boarding: Facial recognition replaces repeated document checks

Once enrolled, passengers are recognized at each touchpoint without needing to repeatedly present travel documents.

Security, Control, and Passenger Choice

The system is built on infrastructure designed for high security standards and data protection. Passenger identity remains under user control, with biometric participation offered as an opt-in service rather than a requirement.

Airport staff remain available to support travelers who prefer traditional document-based processing, ensuring accessibility for all passenger types.

Scaling Biometric Travel Across the Airport Ecosystem

Fast Pass is currently focused on departing passengers, but expansion plans are already in place. In the near future, transit passengers at Hamad International Airport will also be able to use the system.

Other airlines operating at the airport may also integrate into the biometric ecosystem, extending contactless travel beyond a single carrier and creating a more connected hub experience.

IATA research shows strong passenger preference for biometric identification over physical documents, reinforcing the industry-wide shift toward digital identity systems.

Industry Perspective: A Shift in Passenger Processing

According to Selim Bouri, President, Middle East, Africa & Türkiye at SITA, the aviation sector is entering a new phase where trusted digital identity becomes central to airport operations.

He notes that verifying a passenger once and recognizing them throughout the journey improves efficiency while keeping travelers in control of their data. The model demonstrated at Hamad International Airport is expected to influence future global airport designs.

What This Means for Travelers

For passengers, the experience becomes noticeably smoother:

  • No need to repeatedly search for boarding passes
  • Faster movement through bag drop and security
  • Reduced physical document handling
  • Continuous identity recognition across airport touchpoints

Instead of stopping repeatedly for checks, the journey becomes more continuous and fluid.

Industry Perspective: Digital Identity Takes Center Stage

Selim Bouri, President, Middle East, Africa & Türkiye at SITA, said trusted digital identity is now redefining air travel:

“Trusted digital identity is transforming how passengers move through airports. When a traveler is verified once and recognized across the journey, airports run more smoothly and passengers stay in control of their data. Hamad International Airport shows how this works at scale. This is the future of faster, simpler, trust-based travel.”

The Future of Airport Biometric Systems

With mobile-first integration at its core, Fast Pass is expected to expand beyond airport terminals in future phases. This could include remote enrollment and verification before passengers even arrive at the airport, further reducing friction in air travel.

As airports worldwide handle increasing passenger volumes, biometric identity systems like Fast Pass are positioning themselves as the foundation of next-generation airport operations.
