Amilla Maldives has appointed Marc Reader as General Manager, bringing more than three decades of international hospitality experience and a longstanding connection with the Maldives to the role.
Reader’s career spans Australia, Singapore and the Maldives, with experience in luxury resort operations, property repositioning, commercial development and team leadership.
He returns to the destination after holding senior leadership positions at Huvafen Fushi, PER AQUUM and Finolhu. At Finolhu, he led the resort from Christmas 2016 until Easter 2023.
Marc Reader Returns to the Maldives
Reader began his career in culinary arts and hospitality management. This background shaped his interest in food, service and the details that influence the guest experience.
Over the years, he has taken on senior roles across the international hospitality sector. His leadership approach focuses on people, operational performance and guest experiences.
His experience in the Maldives has also given him an understanding of the destination’s luxury hospitality market and the international travel partners that connect visitors with the islands.
Commercial Partnerships and Guest Experience
At Amilla Maldives, Reader will focus on developing commercial relationships and expanding the resort’s presence in key international markets.
He will work with tour operators, travel advisors, destination management companies and other strategic partners. He also plans to maintain an active presence in the global travel trade and engage with industry partners to understand changing traveller expectations.
At the resort, Reader will work with the team to build on Amilla Maldives’ existing identity, develop its people and maintain service standards. The focus will also include the guest experience and the island’s relaxed atmosphere.
A Different Perspective on Luxury
Reader’s view of luxury hospitality has evolved throughout his career. While villas, restaurants and facilities remain important, he believes that luxury increasingly centres on less tangible qualities: time, space, freedom and the ability to experience a destination on one’s own terms.
This perspective reflects the natural setting of Amilla Maldives, located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll.
The island features a marine environment that includes its Blue Hole, alongside mature banyan trees, lush vegetation and abundant birdlife. These natural surroundings provide opportunities for guests to explore the island, reconnect with others or enjoy a slower pace of life.
Reader also recognises that different travellers have different expectations. Couples may seek time together, while families and multi-generational groups may prioritise shared experiences.
His approach is to create opportunities for guests without dictating how they spend their time.
Building on Amilla Maldives’ Position
Looking ahead, Reader aims to develop the resort’s existing strengths while preserving its individual character.
His priorities include investing in the team, strengthening industry partnerships and maintaining flexibility in the guest experience. Through these efforts, he intends to deepen Amilla Maldives’ relationships with the international travel community and develop its presence among travellers visiting the Maldives.
